Objective To investigate the effect of auditory integration training (AIT) on the intelligence development of children with mental retardation. Methods Eighty-six children with mental retardation, who were hospitalized in our hospital between May 2016 and October 2016, were randomly divided into the study group (n=43) and the control group (n=43). The control group was treated by conventional comprehensive rehabilitation, and the study group was treated with early AIT on the basis of conventional comprehensive rehabilitation. The clinical effects were evaluated at 2 months after treatment. The Gesell development test was performed at the baseline and at 2 months after treatment, respectively, and the physical development index (PDI) and mental development index (MDI) were calculated. Results The effects were evaluated at 2 months after the treatment, and the effective rates in the study group and the control group were 93.0% (40/43) and 69.8% (30/43) , respectively, with the statistically significant difference between two groups (P<0.05). At 2 months after treatment, the scores of Gesell development test in the study group were significantly higher than those in the control group (all P<0.05). The PDI and MDI at 2 months after treatment were (78.03±5.87) and (80.12±5.51) in the study group, and (69.86±6.10) and (70.83 ± 5.48) in the control group, respectively, with the statistically significant differences between two groups (all P<0.05). Conclusion Early AIT may enhance the rehabilitation of children with mental retardation, and significantly improve their intelligence development.
