The anomalous magnetic moment of the positive muon

Joel Kindem · 1998

A measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the positive muon (a ) has been made in a new experiment using the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Polarized muons were stored in a precision magnetic field and a was determined by measuring the difference frequency (! a ) between the spin precession frequency and cyclotron frequency. A detailed analysis of the first data set (1997) is presented. Focus is on using the Ratio Method technique for extracting ! a from the muon decay spectrum. The Ratio Method yielded the value: a = 1 165 933(16) \\Theta 10 \\Gamma9 (\\Sigma14 ppm) ; where the values of !a !p = 3:707 245(52) \\Theta 10 \\Gamma9 and p = 3:183 345 47(47) were used to calculate a . This value of a agrees with the Standard Model prediction to within one standard deviation a SM = 1 165 916:28(77) \\Theta 10 \\Gamma9 (\\Sigma0:66 ppm) : i Acknowledgements My first thought, when writing these acknowledgments, was to think of some c...
