Measuring the quality of scientific achievements plays an increasingly important role in today’s research environments. While there are established metrics for traditional outlets of scientific content, in particular journals, assessing the quality of less formal publication venues, such as conferences and workshops, is less established and more challenging. In this article, we develop a comprehensive framework of assessment metrics particularly suited for conferences, workshops, symposia, and series of such events. The quality metrics are specified based on a conceptual model for these types of events and related information. The overall 54 metrics are grouped into three categories of metrics related to persons, to events, and bibliometrics, as well as 13 quality dimensions. We empirically apply our assessment methodology to 10 conferences and workshops in the computer science area and showcase the assessment results according to various quality metrics.
