Abstract Various tests for the best number of clusters in a data set are reviewed, following an exhaustive validation exercise using artificial data sets with hierarchical agglomerative clustering methods. The chapter concludes with a discussion about whether it is appropriate to apply statistical tests or to evaluate a classification at several levels of usability.
