Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks

Dr Ian F. Akyildiz, Mehmet Can Vuran · 2010

Wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs) became the focus of research in a wide variety of areas including digital signal processing, communication, networking, control, and statistics in recent years. This chapter discusses the state of the art in algorithms, protocols, and hardware for the development of WMSNs. Furthermore, several open research issues are highlighted. The first section of the chapter points out the characteristics of WMSNs as well as their differences from traditional WSNs. In the second section, various architectures that could be adopted for WMSNs are described. The third section introduces the existing platforms as well as the deployed research testbeds. The chapter then focuses on existing solutions at the physical, link, network, transport, and application layers of the protocol stack. It provides cross-layer design aspects in WMSNs. In the final section, the chapter discusses additional complementary research areas. Controlled Vocabulary Terms cross layer design
