This paper presents an algorithm to obtain low power FIR filters, which modifies the original filter coefficients to include more number of zeros. This is achieved by approximating the filter coefficients to the nearby values, which have more number of zeros in its binary representation, while maintaining the filter performance within its limits. This approach reduces the number of non-zero partial products and switching activity and hence, the power dissipation in the filters. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is verified by designing the FIR filter coefficients using this approximation algorithm and analysing its power consumption and performance parameters.
