High‐Definition Television*

Abstract A high‐definition television (HDTV) system is a new television system that delivers spectacular video and compact‐disc quality sound. The system also has many features that are absent in conventional systems, such as data channels and interoperability with computers and telecommunications networks. This article summarizes the characteristics of an HDTV system, the history of its standardization in the United States and the enabling technologies.
