Abstract Image processing is concerned with the processing of digital images for the purpose of image enhancement, image restoration, image compression, and feature salienation so that the processed image can be viewed by a higher‐level computer vision module. These objectives are achieved by using linear and nonlinear methods. From the mathematical point of view, a digital image is a two‐dimensional array of numbers; so the linear methods used are based on linear algebra. The nonlinear methods used are various types of thresholding as well as methods based on statistics and probability.
