The exponential growth of user demands and the limitations of 3G systems have brought researchers and industry to propose solutions for the next generation. Among the requirements are higher bit rates and cheaper deployment. In this paper we focus on a terminal complexity problem related to channel equalization in the downlink, which these requirements lead to. We propose to solve the problem by applying pre-processing at the base station, thereby rendering the terminal simple. We establish a general MIMO block transmission model, and derive different transmit/receive filters, based on the Linear Minimum Mean Square Error (LMMSE) criterion. We compare the Signal-to-Interference+Noise Ratio (SINR) and Bit-Error Ratio (BER) performance of the filter methods in different scenarios.
