Enabling CoDel AQM with TCP Cubic connections over satellite links

Router queues are fundamental elements of an IP based network. In fact, each end-to-end connection (established with a transport protocol, e.g., TCP) will encounter several routers on the path, which should store and forward the corresponding IP packets according to routing rules. In particular, one of these routers will have as output link the one with the lowest capacity, called the "bottleneck link". This very router, called the bottleneck router, is the one characterizing the most the whole path. In particular, its buffer must be sized on the basis of the expected load which, if exceeded, will determine IP packet drops. For all end-to-end connections sharing a given bottleneck router, the resulting unavoidable drops are a critical element to determine the connections' performance. This paper addresses the problem in tailoring such buffer and, after briefly introducing possible smart approaches to perform targeted drops (and in particular CoDel), will focus on the implications in their configuration for geostationary satellite bottleneck links.
