Solutions of the Bethe-Salpeter equation by a variational method.

A variational principle for the pion-nucleon phase-shifts is derived. It is based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation with nucleon exchange as the interaction kernel. The details of a procedure for carrying out the implied calculation are presented. The calculation is reduced to solving sets of linear equations.
