Spark Learning and Create Joy

Colleen Schmit · 2020

Learning expectations and teaching standards have changed over the years in early childhood classrooms and settings. A focus on rigor and high expectations have often replaced a focus of sparking joy and creativity. Cookie-cutter, rote learning activities are frequently used and encouraged in many of our birth through third-grade classrooms. This chapter delivers the importance of supporting creative thinking skills and eliminating rote learning within early childhood settings and classrooms. Advocating for best practices for young children helps not only the children within your care but also your colleagues to have the freedom to implement developmentally appropriate practices within their classrooms too.
