Gathering of Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) is a fundamental military activity. An area under military surveillance must be secured against attacks of enemy forces. Such areas under surveillance are large in expanse. Such terrain is also not always plain and contusive for easy movement of forces and equipment. In addition to the challenge posed by the topography, presence of enemy elements makes it harder to maneuver. Irrespective of presence or absence of enemy forces, the task of gathering basic ground intelligence is hazardous to lives of trained reconnaissance soldiers. A wireless sensor network (WSN) can be designed to suit requirements of military ISR to save man hours and avoid unnecessary loss of precious lives. In this paper we present results of simulation experiments carried out to implement a basic intelligent infrastructure for WSN that determines the shortest route across an area under surveillance. The shortest route is determined to connect the base station and a predefined location that is strategically important to carrying out of further attack or counter measures. In addition to determining the shortest route, the proposed framework also avoids enemy elements and keeps a count of enemy elements encountered along the path. Number of hops required to reach the point of vantage is also determined to help gain insight in to time required to reach it.
