Improvement of Routing Protocol for IoT Network Using SDN/OpenFlow

Faiza Mahmood Shuker · 2019

Generally, Internet of things (IoT) has been coming to the markets at all times, including small sensors that work on the ability of a very small battery. One of the most important functions of the sensors is to read certain values or several specific values from their environments such as heat, humidity, pressure, fire, smoke, certain gases, sound, movement, fluids, voltage, speed, light or reading certain events. The main problem in the sensors is energy consumption, especially in areas where it is difficult to deliver electricity. To keep the battery life up to a certain length of time, many works try to reduce calculations or reduce the data transfer period, especially if the medium is wireless. One of the most important processes that need processing time is routing processing, especially in the forwarding packet, where it is possible that any sensor acts as a router or data router. Once the sensor has been activated as a router or a switch, it must have a control plane and data plane. In this paper, the control plane is isolated from the data plan by using the structure of the software-defined network (SDN), and the group of sensors can be controlled by a single control plane. The OpenFlow protocol is used between the controller and the sensor. The required measurements have been made by increasing the volume of the transferred data, measuring the power expended in each sensor, the length of the path between the data source and the receiving party, and measuring the power spent on it.
