New products enable firms not only to accrue high profits but also to leapfrog competition. Different key activities and processes have been proposed to increase the likelihood of successful product innovation. Software products have different characteristics, which need different treatment than products in other domains. Current research on software innovation is still scattered among different areas. This study accumulates the current knowledge and empirical evidences of software product innovation using a systematic literature review approach, and builds the path for future research in this area. Among others, our findings highlight research gaps, as well as best practices and determinants for software product innovation from the reviewed empirical studies.
