Navigation in Virtual Reality

Adriana Peña Pérez Negrón, Graciela Lara López, Elsa Estrada Guzmán · 2020

Navigation in virtual reality (VR) is a broad area of research. This technology might be the key to understand a number of aspects related to navigation skills because VR proportionate a 3D space in a controlled situation with the possibility of collecting, in an automatic mode, all kinds of users’ interactions with the virtual environment (VE). Navigation can be either active or passive. Passive navigation usually involves the presentation of visual information on a path or environment to a static observer, while active navigation requires actual moving around the environment. A number of aspects differentiate navigation in real life from navigation in VEs, starting with the fact that in VR, navigation does not include physical restrictions; people can, for example, fly or be tele-transported. In VR, the direction of navigation is usually associated with the user’s view of the scenario, that is, the user navigation direction is in front of him/her.
