The Messaging Protocols Analysis of Integrating Blockchain and Edge Computing for IoT

The integration of blockchain (BC) and edge computing (EC) enables more reliable access and control for Internet of Things (IoT), providing faster network services, richer data storage and calculations in the edge network in a secure manner. However, the choice of messaging protocol is a challenging task, no single protocol can meet all the current cases. The MQTT and CoAP protocols are two well-known lightweight protocols to address the dilemma. In this paper, we compare and analyze the strengths and limitations of MQTT and CoAP based the practical application of integration. A new messaging model combining two protocols is proposed to make up and solve the shortcomings currently faced. The experimental results show the performance of the two protocols and their combination is better than the use of one single protocol.
