Situated Regulation of Scientific Text Processing

Jose Otero, Jos‚ A. Le¢n, Arthur C. Graesser · 2014

Some cognitive activities are important for all kinds of reading and learning from text, regardless of text type and conditions. Activation of prior knowl edge is an example. Prior knowledge is needed for reading and understand ing in situations that range from reading narrative texts for pleasure to studying scientific texts for educational purposes (W. Kintsch, 1998). Al though the need to activate prior knowledge may be general, the specific regulation strategies applied to activate relevant knowledge may differ for each situation. Alexander, Graham, and Harris (1998) called strategies that are situation-specific particularized. We prefer the term situated. Situated regulation strategies are regulation strategies that are typically bound to the requirements of the situation in which they occur. We assume that these strategies may represent more general regulation strategies, which the per son also uses in other situations. However, they may also incorporate strate gic elements that are newly constructed to meet the requirements of the situation.
