A two-dimensional discrete-time Markov model is developed for short-range IEEE 802.15.4 wireless networks operating in non-beacon-enabled mode. The model is used for obtaining different medium access control (MAC) parameters like average number of backoffs, clear channel assessment (CCA) probability and collision probability. Next, cross-layer error probability is calculated by combining the physical (PHY) layer frame error rate and MAC layer collision probability. Finally, a combined PHY + MAC cross-layer energy model is developed where per-bit energy consumption is calculated considering a total frame transmission sequence between a source node and a destination node. It is seen that frame length and signal to noise ratio (SNR) have considerable impact on energy consumption, but the energy remains invariant with number of nodes. The analysis is also extended for the case when an acknowledgement is requested and it was shown that the provision for acknowledgement substantially increases energy consumption.
