This report presents a method for autonomous navigation of a mobile robot, a concept which can be built upon with the goal of achieving long-term robotic activity without human intervention. An IR transmitter is designed consisting of a NE 555 timer (normal remote) and an IR LED, while an IR receiver is mounted to an 8051-microcontroller robot. The system was changed and improved over each iteration, to resist environmental hurdles and implement obstacle avoidance, which ultimately resulted in a navigation success rate of 93 percent over 50 trials.
