The Angular Spectrum Method Of Transducer Characterization

Mark Evan Schafer · 2020

This chapter presents a relatively new approach to transducer characterization and ultrasonic field analysis. It examines the motivation for the use of the angular spectrum technique, the theory behind it, and a brief review of the literature on the subject. The chapter describes a brief description of an experimental system designed to implement the angular spectrum techniques and apply them to ultrasonic transducer analysis. It discusses selected examples of the reconstructed surface velocity patterns of several different acoustic sources, including single element and multielement phased arrays. The techniques developed are based on the angular spectrum, or Fourier decomposition method, which is one of the more powerful wavefield propagation techniques available. Powers presented a thorough review of the Angular Spectrum technique, including a comparison with more conventional diffraction integral approaches. A number of papers on the use of the angular spectrum technique in acoustics have been published recently by the Physical Acoustics Group at the Pennsylvania State University.
