The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Current and Future Dense Wireless Networks

Bruna Toledo Guedes, Fernanda G. O. Passos, Diego Gimenez Passos · 2019

The density of wireless networks has been increasing for decades and this trend is expected to continue with the popularization of the Internet of Things. Coupled with the current spectral scarcity and the ever-growing demand for capacity, the outlook of dense wireless networks presents several research challenges. In this paper, we provide a brief overview of those challenges and discuss how Artificial Intelligence may provide invaluable tools in this context. In particular, we take the Restricted Access Window mechanism, found in the recent IEEE 802.11ah amendment, as a case study. Based on simulation results, we show how the well-known K-means clusterization method may be used to significantly enhance the performance of that mechanism.
