Effect of picture size and definition on perceived image quality

Peter G. J. Barten · 2003

By a modification of the expression for the modulation threshold function of the eye, the square root integral (SQRI) model has been adapted to describe the effect of picture size as well as resolution on subjective image quality. In this way an excellent correlation was found between SQRI value and subjective image quality for measurement data of J.H.D.M. Westerink and J.A.J. Roufs (1988). Excellent correlation was found between the subjective image quality measurements of Westerink and Roufs and calculated SQRI values. The analysis confirms that there is a linear relation between subjective image quality and SQRI value. This also means that there is a linear relation between subjective image quality and just-noticeable differences.>
