Pull and Perfection

Peter Middleton, James Sutton · Productivity Press eBooks · 2020

Pull depends on demand to initiate production, then kanban to trigger demand for the inputs of the stages of development all the way back to value resolution. In software production, strong customer interest starts the ball rolling. Sometimes that interest is in the form of firm commitment, as in a contract. The stages in this example are simply the top-level stages of the software life-cycle. One-piece flow is important to a pull system because producing single pieces eliminates batching and inventories, which shelter the production line from customer demand and make pull impossible. Process perfection is “the complete elimination of muda ,” Thus, a perfect process will perfectly obey the value stream principle. The difference between the perfection principle and the value stream principle is that the perfection principle deals with poka-yoke techniques for driving all muda to zero.
