The fast growing innovations in the wireless communication domain has led to increase in the number of users using the platform to carry out their respective tasks. Moreover it has led to demand on the frequency spectrum. The band allocation organization like FCC (Federal Communication Commission) has taken many steps in the band allocation policies. The demand on frequency spectrum is a key factor which has to be governed properly and suitable steps are to be implemented on the frequency spectrum monitoring. The Cognitive Radio is one such novel solution for spectrum management. The spectrum sensing is one of the main steps involved in the Cognitive radio. There are various methods of spectrum sensing and it will depend according to the type of signals which has to be scanned. To develop the cognitive radio approach the GNU platform is considered and its features are been described. The performance evaluation for various methods of spectrum sensing has been described in this paper. The IQ plot analysis of received FM signal, AIR PROBE GSM is a particular file (flow graph) which when executed allows the user to analyze the cell operator point information and also the GSM band which is already in use and the band utilization at different instances of time is analyzed. In the similar manner the cognitive radio approach can be applied to find whitespaces (unused band in Spectrum) in a given radio environment.
