The Internet of Things (IoT) is a computing terminology that conveys the concept of material entities connected to the internet and communicating with other devices. In other words, IoT constitutes of all the objects connected to the internet interacting with each other. Technologies like sensors and Wi-Fi embedded with devices or home appliances help in improving the overall quality of life by exchanging data among each other under a networking platform which is as IoT. By amalgamating all these connected devices with automation-based systems, it becomes convenient to collect information and analyze it in order to derive some meaningful conclusion. IoT brings with it the facility to achieve efficiency in the way to perform tasks, thereby conserving time and funds. As the price of communications and sensors drop, more devices are being added to the IoT because of it’s cost effectiveness. This induction of many devices poses remarkable coercion to the privacy and security of the data being shared on the network. Routing protocols come to the rescue during this kind of security breach. This paper firstly presents different routing protocols of IoT. Then their comparative analysis is performed on the basis of different performance parameters namely latency, energy consumption, redundancy elimination, route optimization and bandwidth. Lastly, various research challenges of the routing protocols are discussed briefly.
