A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a network that refers to a group of spatially disseminate and devoted sensors. A WSN system unite a portal that transfer wireless connectivity back to the wired world and distributed nodes. The wireless sensor network uses the open system interconnection (OSI) model to transfer the data from one source to another. The data link layer of the OSI model is used to provide the reliable communication between the sources. To achieve this, the data link layer has been divided into two sublayers, (i) Logical Link Control (LLC) and (ii) Media Access Control (MAC). Media Access control (MAC) is a communication interface for wireless sensor networks (WSN,s). In this paper, different media access protocols such as SMAC, 6LOWPN, R-MAC, D-MAC, Z-MAC and TREE-MAC have been discussed and their security issues have also been studied. Based on the detailed review, the pros and cons to the MAC protocols have been discussed along with the counter measures for the security issues raised in the protocols.
