Language Processing: Plato and Expert Systems

Natural language processing is very quick developing area of artificial intelligence with many applications mainly because it refers to people most intuitive and natural way of communication. The chapter discuss the key applications and also recalling the concept of information bypass as a tool to filter incredible amount of information nowadays (unable for human to be consume and processed). The syntax analysis is described together with some basic examples. Then the semantics is carefully discussed together with the presentation of the key challenges in that area. Various techniques are introduced: keywords, language ontologies (based on synsets and the relations between them like hyponymy or meronymy), context and sentiment analysis. The topic of sub-languages is also reviewed. The final part of the chapter focuses on the importance of these area of research, NLP systems as interfaces in the human-computer interactions, and how such interfaces can potentially affect and change our societies.
