Wireless sensor network (WSN) has been recently used in several applications and scenarios, among which is environmental monitoring and critical event detection within a specific area of interests (AoI). However, to have an efficient and reliable network implementation, it is important to optimize the WSN motes to prolong the network lifetime. In this paper, an energy-efficient implementation for WSN is presented that utilizes deep-sleep power-saving mode in order to optimize the energy consumption while maintaining a reliable sensing and monitoring operation. Experimental performance evaluations that both consider sensing and wireless data transmission were conducted, which showed the effectiveness of the proposed WSN implementation. Furthermore, the effect of applying the advanced encryption standard (AES) on the nodes' energy levels is experimentally tested and compared with the case without encryption.
