An Adaptive Fast Intra Mode Decision in Screen Content Coding

Compared with H.265/HEVC, Screen Content Coding(SCC) introduces a lots of intra prediction tools in intra coding as the emerging video coding extension standard to HEVC. Although it adopts two new coding tools, intra block (IBC) and palette (PLT) mode to improve the compression performance for intra coding, mode decision method is at the cost of high computational complexity. In this paper, we analyze the relation between a block's texture characteristics and its best coding mode, Based on the analysis, we further develop an adaptive strategy for fast mode decision in intra coding for SCC. Experimental results show significant computational saving in test conditions compared to the default SCM-8.0 with a marginal BD-rate increase.
