Sensor Data Processing

Vivek Kale · 2019

The node distribution, communication, and dissemination strategies, as well as the cooperative processing capabilities of hundreds or even thousands of small devices, are critical aspects to assure the actual performance and reliability of the planned application. The chapter started with discussion of sensor data-gathering and data-dissemination mechanisms. The main purpose of a sensor database system is to facilitate the data-collection process. Once data are gathered by multiple sources (e.g., sensors in the vicinity of the event of interest), they are forwarded perhaps through multiple hops to a single destination (sink). Data fusion can be performed with different objectives such as inference, estimation, feature maps, aggregation, abstract sensors, classification, and compression. Techniques, methods, and algorithms used to fuse data can be classified based on several criteria, such as the data abstraction level, parameters, mathematical foundation, purpose, and type of data.
