SDN Based Fast and Soft Handover (FSH) For a Shuttle Bus Monitoring System

Nadia Mouawad, Rola Naja, Samir Tohmé · 2019

Shuttle buses are deployed on roads for public transportation. In order to track their location and guarantee high levels of safety, these vehicles communicate with a monitoring center through a vehicular network. This messages exchange requires a low latency communication, with no interruption and with a reduced packets loss. In this case, the mobility management should be studied carefully. This paper proposes a handover scheme (FSH) based on Software Defined Networking (SDN) technology. FSH provides a soft handover by adopting mobility anticipation and using both vehicle interfaces simultaneously. Moreover, FSH achieves control signaling overhead reduction and network congestion alleviation. The performance evaluation shows that our proposed algorithm reduces handover losses and end to end communication delays.
