The Dark Side of Using Augmented Reality ( AR ) Training Systems in Industry
Nirit Gavish · 2019
Augmented Reality (AR) systems, in which virtual information is superimposed on the real, physical environment, are becoming more and more used in industry. Some of their purpose is to serve as training systems. Designing the AR-based training systems should consider the possible threats. This chapter discusses the effects of three threats on the effectiveness and efficiency of the industrial training. The high physical fidelity of these systems should be compared to the benefits of high cognitive fidelity. The ability to add virtual feedback to the real-world task should be considered carefully, given that feedback can also inhibit deeper learning processes. Finally, enhancing the real-world experience with more information channels has the potential of improving acquisition, but there is evidence that in some situations the additional information channels might interfere with essential processes such as active exploration and communication.
