Digital Filters and z-Transform
Francis F. Li, Trevor J. Cox · 2019
Digital filters are known to be flexible and can be cheap to implement with technologies. To highlight these particular advantages, a historical view of various electronic filters would be useful. Modern filters and especially digital filters certainly can do much more than traditional ones can do. The scope of filters has gone far beyond the traditional sense. The chapter highlights the essential concepts, and presents typical acoustics and audio related application and a few important legendary audio filters. Of the many types of analogue filters, some standard forms are particularly useful as they preserve their attractive features under bilinear transformation to a discrete time implementation. The Finite impulse response (FIR) filters have impulse responses of limited lengths, while the impulse responses of infinite impulse response (IIR) filters are infinitely long. From a perspective of filter structure, FIR filters take a feed-forward structure; IIR filters employ recursive configurations or feed-back loops.
