P1687.1: Accessing Embedded 1687 Instruments using Alternate Device Interfaces other than JTAG

Alfred L. Crouch, Bradford G. Van Treuren, Jeff Rearick · 2019

P1687.1 is an IEEE standards effort to define access to embedded instruments in a 1687 network, which includes IEEE 1500 wrappers, but through alternate device pin interfaces and controllers (DPICs) such as I2C and SPI. Such access is useful not just for device testing, but also in the context of board and system tests, which can now be under the control of embedded application software when functional interfaces are involved. Several possible use models are considered which have implications on the architecture of the proposed standard, particularly in how to facilitate system test access and management by enabling scalable access to instruments throughout the system hierarchy.
