Image Analysis in Cytopathology

Liron Pantanowitz, Marilyn M. Bui · Monographs in clinical cytology/Clinical cytology · 2020

Digital image analysis is applicable to clinical and non-clinical use cases in cytopathology. Various cytology samples, including smears, liquid-based preparations, and cell blocks, are suitable for image analysis. Cytopathology is one of the original fields in medicine where computer-assisted tools were successfully adopted to automate Pap test screening. Since then, there have been numerous publications applying digital image analysis to fine-needle aspiration and exfoliative specimens. Image algorithms have evolved from offering simple quantitative image analysis of biomarkers to sophisticated artificial intelligence tools due to improvements in computers and deep-learning techniques. This chapter reviews the literature and commercial marketplace of digital image analysis applied to cytopathology.
