Computer-Assisted Pap Test Screening

Two FDA-approved automated imaging systems are in widespread use today, namely the ThinPrep Imaging System and FocalPoint GS Imaging System. Both systems use proprietary algorithms applied to computerized images. Post-implementation studies have shown that this technology improves cytologists’ productivity in high-volume cytology laboratories. However, several studies have questioned the impact on workload, cost effectiveness, and accuracy of these automation-associated systems compared to manual screening. This chapter reviews the development, underlying technology, and workflow of various automated Pap test screening systems. The literature regarding automated Pap test screening is also critically reviewed.
