Current modern day Vehicles have numerous Electronic Control Units (ECUs) integrated in to them. A high end Car can have around 150 ECUs in it, so naturally the complexity of a modern day CAR is way too high when compared to the earlier Cars and this trend of growing software in Cars will further increase in future due to future technologies such as Autonomous Driving, Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) etc.. Since the system is highly complicated, the volume of software flashed at the manufacturing line is naturally way too high. Therefore the software update process of ECU should take as little time as possible. In this paper, I present technologies for flashing of Electronic Control Units (ECUs) used in automotive industry and their present capabilities in research and in the automotive market. And finally measurements are made for flashing an ECU using Controller Area Network (CAN) and Controller Area Network with Flexible Data-rate (CAN FD) protocol.
