In China, research in drug design began in the late 1970s and has flourished in the early 2000s through several generations of effort, which has placed the research level of China in this field at the global forefront. With the application of computer-aided drug design approaches, many small-molecule drug candidates have entered the clinical trial stage, and some have been approved for therapeutic use by the National Drug Administration of China. This paper reviews the development of drug design in China and summarizes the main achievements in this field over the past 40 years in terms of establishment, growth, maturation, and thriving stages.
