z-Transform and Discrete Systems

The transfer function H ( z ) of a linear time-invariant system is a very important representation. It tells many things about the stability of the system, the poles, the zeros, and the shape of the transients of the output of the system. Using H ( z ), the steady-state response of the system and the particular solution of the system all in one step can be found. The z -transform is a frequency domain representation that makes solution, design, and analysis of discrete linear systems simpler. It also gives some insights about the frequency contents of signals where these insights are hard to see in real-time systems. The most important part of the application of the z -transform is the use in the design of digital filters.
