AI, Alife and Emergent Computation

Hitoshi Iba · 2019

This chapter provides the background of and basic introduction to Evolutionary Computation, i.e., genetic algorithms (GA), genetic programming (GP) and multi-objective optimization. These are key techniques for simulating the complex systems described in the following chapters. Key ideas about emergent computation, such as exploration vs. exploitation issues and UCT algorithms are also explained. Then, an interesting CA demonstration (Wireworld simulation), in which a Turing-machine is implemented in virtual worlds, is explored.
