The article describes a search for principles to construct an interval theory of data processing for a physics practical course of a new type. Initially, the authors turn to the analysis of the traditional course. They examine its three components: elementary methods of mathematical statistics, the geometric method, and the syncretic set of regression analysis formulas, and show that none of the methods of these components can be used as a general principle. The authors’ conclusion is: the traditional physical practical course is a fragmentary entity — there is no single logical core in it that would link its techniques and methods into the whole. The system of four statements, from which one can get the entire arsenal of mathematical formulas for processing the results of measurements of the traditional workshop, was found in mathematical statistics. However, in essence, it is a system of statements of the point paradigm and therefore also cannot be the basis of the interval theory of data processing for a physics practical course of a new type.Key words: laboratory work, physics practical course, confidence interval, data analysis, data processing, interval theory.
