The Internet of Things (IoT) empowers the smart objects to interface and trade information, making it easier for the physical world to engage with digital frameworks, improving usability and control. To make objects linked to IoT more productive and improve control various techniques are utilized such as Artificial Intelligence and Wireless sensor networks. Wireless sensor networks are defined as large distributed and self-directed, networks of low powered devices called nodes or motes. These networks have an edge over conventional networks and have large implications even in the field of Internet of things but despite their superior characteristics they face some major issues such as scalability, security and limited on-board power, etc. Routing is used for selecting a path of data transfer with minimum packet loss and energy consumption. In this paper we survey routing techniques and hierarchical based routing with its protocols like LEACH, SEP, DEEC, TEEN and PEGASIS. We compare these existing protocols in terms of network lifetime, network depletion, number of packets to base station and discuss the observations and future challenges of these protocols in large scale as well as small scale IoT applications.
