In the research paper, a novel backoff algorithm is proposed for Cognitive Radio Network (CRN). Traditional IEEE802.11 works in Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) mode and uses Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB) algorithm. The proposed new backoff algorithm works on the exponential decrease of contention window. In the algorithm, the size of contention window does not decrease down to zero on a successful transmission rather decreases exponentially. This improves performance for high contention scenarios in CRN. The reported work also focuses on primary user receiver (PU receiver) protection from the hazardous transmission encountered due to presence of nearby CR traffic. The novelty of protection algorithm lies in the approach of accessing location and other relevant inform from PU. Here a CR node can access location of PU with the help of GPS system. Further the primary receiver protection is done by implementing a power control algorithm at CR user end. The performance of the scenario gets improved in the domain of average throughput and delay with the novel backoff algorithm. The power control algorithm at CR end ensures the PU receiver protection along with less need of energy for network operation.
