Abstract Much has been written about the virtualization of mobile networks but very little about the practical aspects of this important paradigm shift. In this article, we address the practical aspects of creating an Infrastructure‐as‐a‐Service (IaaS). We first discuss some basic concepts and then focus on most promising technologies that allow the creation of such an infrastructure. Technologies such as OpenStack and Docker are discussed, and a practical implementation with libvirt deployed using Terraform solution is presented. Finally, we discuss specific aspects of Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and how a 5G network can really make use of an IaaS.
