Do Contrast Measures Correlate? A Pilot Investigation

Different issues related to contrast has been investigated in image processing and computer vision. This has made introducing an accurate contrast measure an important issue. While over the years different contrast measures have been introduced, little attention has been paid to the relationship of these different contrast measures with each other. By applying nine different contrast measures on a large-scale database of images (the Caltech 256 database) we aim to investigate how these contrast measures correlate with each other. This study can provide a better understanding of how different contrast measures perform and to what parameters (content, colorfulness, etc.) they are more sensitive towards.
