The 5G Wireless Networks are anticipated to play a vital role in the life of human beings. Cooperative diversity is a part of 5G mobile standard which consisting of a source (Laptop), a relay (another Laptop) and a destination (Wi-Fi router). The selection combining scheme traditionally used in the general MIMO does not provide required bit error rate performance. In this paper, we introduced a new modified selection combining scheme known as `Improved Selection Combining' in which a scaling factor is added in the selection combining decision metric which improves the performance. An algorithm has been developed to investigate the performance of the cooperative diversity system with quaternary phase-shift keying (QPSK) modulation in the presence of Non Line-of-Communication environment. Simulation results specify that the proposed scheme performs better than the conventional selection combining and direct transmission.
