Check-In with the SISAC Symbol (Bar Code): Implementation and Uses for Libraries, Publishers and Automation Vendors
Tina Feick, M. Stephen Dane, George Wright, Jim Young, Marcella Lesher · 2020
In this chapter, the authors begin with the session with a brief overview of the activities and purposes of the Serials Industry Systems Advisory Committee (SISAC). SISAC activities have been concentrated in three areas: standardization of formats to allow for computer-to-computer transmission of all business transactions for the serials industry; automation through a standardized machine-readable code to identify specific serial issues, and standardization of coding of contributions within serials. The serial item data elements of the code are currently being used by several publishers in conjunction with the SISAC symbol and for computer-to-computer communications. The authors speak about why publishers should be using the SISAC bar code. They point out that it is customer friendly–providing immediate access to the publication during the check-in process and has other potential applications such as inventory uses.
