Usability Testing Online Questionnaires: Experiences at the U . S . C ensus B ureau

This chapter shares the hands-on experience of usability testing at the U.S. Census Bureau for household and business online surveys. Included are lessons learned with respect to usability testing regarding cognitive probing, think aloud, eye tracking, efficiency, accuracy, and satisfaction measures. There is also a discussion of identifying and recruiting user groups and strategies on how to fit usability testing into the development lifecycle. The chapter ends by suggesting effective communication techniques to inform the development team of usability issues and possible solutions and how to assess whether these solutions improved the product through iterative testing and paradata analysis.
