ASSESSIG THE FACTORS HINDERING INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY USAGE BY GENERAL CONTRACTORS (GC-1) IN ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA

Now a day ICT is one of the most important enabler of change and revolution in every sector especially for the construction sector. But the application of ICT is not fully utilized because of different factors. Taking this into consideration the current researcher were planned to identify factors hindering ICT usage in sectors and proposed to find out the existing situation concerning ICT usage in the construction sector especially among grade one general contractors (GC-1) who bases in Addis Ababa. Both quantitative and qualitative cross sectional study was conducted to identify factors affecting ICT utilization in construction industry. Purposive sampling method was used to select the study participants. Descriptive statistics was used to describe data by using graphs, charts and frequency. And inferential statistics was used to identify factors hindering ICT usage in construction industry by using chi square test. Those factors who have p value less than or equal to 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. In the current investigation lack of commitment by firms" management towards ICT is the main challenges detected as a significant (P=0.049) factor which is highly hindering the ICT usage. The culture of applying ICT in construction industry is very low. There is lack of awareness on how much ICT utilization maximize profit in construction industry. In addition to this, Satisfaction with existing method of working is also another significant challenge for ICT usage. But interest in firms ICT base, lack of adequate jobs in the market, risk of liability, lack of legal support and security implication of ICT transaction were not significant in the current study. Lack of commitment by firms" management towards ICT and Satisfaction with existing method of working are the most two significant challenges for ICT usage Awareness creation of ICT importance by ICT professionals among managers is highly recommended.
